Upon Seeing a Young Woman

Nirkhii ney navyauvana (Upon seeing a young woman) - Srimad Rajchandra
(Translation from Dadavani Jan'09)

While seeing a young woman
when the slightest vibration of a sexual impulse does not arise
Such a one who sees and counts her as a doll of wood
is the one who is indeed like a God (1)

Having renounced the queen of all that is
beautiful in this world
Is equivalent to renouncing all that is
the embodiment of grief (2)

By conquering sex
you have conquered the worldly life
Just as conquering the King you have
conquered the army, kingdom, and power (3)

To get absorbed and carried away
by the sprouting thought of sexuality
Is equivalent to losing control of all
awareness and knowledge after drinking a little wine (4)

The one who supports the purity of brahamacharya
with a sacred fence from all angles
His further lives before nirvana are minimal
This is a statement based on elemental knowledge, brother (5)

Shiyad means shilvaan.
Such a one, who is chaste and maintains the highest integrity
in thoughts speech and action
gets an excellent fruit(6)

Nothing can be contained without a vessel
and with the right vessel one can attain the Self
To become the vessel
nurture brahmacharya, oh wise ones. (7)

Dadashri: The one who sings this pada spiritual hymn will attain clarity of purity. You should sing this pada hymn, daily, twice everyday. If you triumph over sex then you have won the whole world, that is it! Thereafter go ahead and eat or drink what you like, nothing is going to hinder you. But whoever won this, wins the whole world. This is the only place where a human being gets trapped. Once you triumph over sexuality, you are the Emperor of the world! No karma will be bound-charged at all. Sexuality and sexual interaction through thoughts, speech or acts bind tremendous and horrible karma. Millions of living forms die in only one act of sexual intercourse. And one ends up with roonanubandha binding karmic ties, with all these subtle life forms jives. So if one triumphs over only this one thing: vishaya sex, then it is more than enough.

Sex - The highest pleasure in the Rascal culture

The following quotes are from a dialogue of Srila Prabhupada (Founder of Krishna consciouness movement) with his disciples. The full article can be read the the link at the end of this post.

yan maithunadi grhamedhi sukham hi tuccham kanduyanena karayor iva duhkha duhkham:
"Sex is like the rubbing of two hands to relieve an itch. Those with no spiritual knowledge consider this itching the greatest happiness, although actually, from start to finish, the whole business is distress‑‑and it is most abominable."

"Is that pleasure? These supposedly advanced rascals think it is pleasure to unite the urine-passing parts. [Laughter.] And we have to believe this is pleasure‑a standard of pleasure utterly third‑class, fourth‑class. Yan maithunadi grhamedhi sukham hi tuccham. Very abominable. Tuccham: the Vedic literature says, "Sex is most abominable." And yet these fools take it as the highest goal, and they make all sorts of elaborate arrangements for this abominable pleasure. "

"If you stop sex, then you become spiritually advanced. This is the secret. If you stop sex, then you will become spiritually advanced, and if you indulge in sex, then you will become materially enthusiastic. That is the difference between Western and Eastern culture. The whole Eastern culture is based on how to stop sex, and here in the Western countries‑how to increase sex. They are eating meat, eggs, drinking wine. These things will increase sex desire. And as soon as you get a very satisfactory sex life, you become enthusiastic to work hard. Therefore for karmis, or those seeking material advancement, marriage is necessary, because without sex they cannot work. And for those seeking spiritual advancement, sex is prohibited. "

"after sex–licit or illicit–the consequence is suffering. Even when the sex is licit, then you still have to take care of your wife, and you also have to take care of the children, always in anxiety about their food and clothing, their education, their upliftment, and so on and so forth–always undergoing suffering. "

"And if the sex is illicit, then you have to undergo these sufferings: because you commit the sin of killing the child by contraceptives or abortion, as a result, in your next life you must be killed. And in the mean time, you have to go to the doctor and pay his exorbitant fees, and so on. So where is the relief from suffering? Whether illicit or licit, sex means you have to suffer. "

"Why not stop all the botheration of sex altogether? That they cannot, because they are animals. Because they have created an animal civilization, they cannot escape all this botheration. Kandutive manivasi visaheta dhirah. Why don’t they teach people to become dhirah, sober‑‑"Let me tolerate this itching sensation"‑brahmacari?"

Brahmacharya - quotable quotes

1. "You are not enjoying the happiness of the Soul but instead you have asked for happiness from the body. There is no problem if the happiness derived is from the Soul, but you have borrowed from the body and so you will have to pay it back. This is a loan. Whatever pleasure you derived from that loan, you will have to repay by an equivalent amount of suffering. Whatever has been borrowed from the body will have to be paid back to the body." - Dadashri

2. "After the unbearable heat of a day why is it that the cattle soak in the dirty muddy waters ? The deep desire for coolness from heat makes them forget the stench of the dirty muddy water. Similarly modern day humans who suffer from the constant struggles and tensions of daily life at work and at at home, seek a diversion from the fire of such tensions and a release through sex and forget its consequences over and over again !" - Dadashri

3. "When hunger dire stomach pinches
Gruel and meanest rice like nectar taste
Even so the keenest pleasure springs
Not from the inherent nature of objects
But from the intensity of the desire."
- Sri Ramana Maharshi

4. Q: How does one reach the Supreme State?
Nisargadatta Maharaj: "By renouncing all lesser desires. As long as you are pleased with the lesser, you cannot have the Supreme. Whatever pleases you, keeps you back. Whatever pleases you keeps you back. Until you realize the unsatisfactoriness of everything, its transiency and limitation, and collect your energies in one great longing, ever the first step is not made. On the other hand, the integrity of the desire for the Supreme is by itself a call from the Supreme. Nothing, physical or mental, can give you freedom. You are free once you understand that your bondage is of your own making and cease forging the chains that bind you."

5. "Not knowing the bliss of self-awareness
Eristic people highly rate sex and
Such like pleasures. Living thus
They yearn for these even when they die."
-Sri Ramana Maharshi

6. "Eagerly seizing a bare, dry bone
The foolish dog bites it with sharp teeth
Tears his own mouth, tastes its own blood
And gloating says, 'Nothing else
Is as sweet as bone'
-Sri Ramana Maharshi

7. "Under the tree the shade is pleasant; out in the open the heat is scorching. A person who has been going about in the sun feels cool when he reaches the shade. Someone who keeps on going from the shade into the sun and then back into the shade is a fool. A wise man stays permanently in the shade." - Ramana Maharshi

8. "Through extreme clarity laden thinking processes, it has become established with finality and incontrovertibly siddha that uninterrupted bliss exists through the support, cover and grace of shuddha pure Gnan and that is the only place, where absolute samadhi— without any effects from physical, mental or externally induced disturbances—lies. The view that a woman (sex) is the highest source of pleasure is only the result of the imagination that arises out of deluded and tinted avaran vision drashti. But she is not that for sure. The location (vulva) by which one enjoys the pleasure through a woman is such that if one ‘sees’ it with discriminative vision, it will become evident that it is not even worthy of a vomiting act." - Krupadev Shrimad Rajchandra

Seven gems of dispassion (Vairagya)

Four Spiritual Gems
1. Remember the pains of Samsara
2. Remember Death
3. Remember the Saints
4. Remember God

1 and 2 will produce Vairagya.
3 will bring inspiration.
4 will cause attainment of God-Consciousness.

How To Get Vairagya
(Remember these seven vital points)

1. Hari Om, Sensual pleasure is momentary, deceptive, illusory and imaginary.
2. A mustard of pleasure is mixed with a mountain of pain.
3. Enjoyment cannot bring about satisfaction of a desire. On the contrary it makes the mind more restless after enjoyment through intense craving (Trishnas and Vasanas).
4. Sensual pleasure is an enemy of Brahma-Jnana
5. Sensual pleasure is the cause for birth and death.
6. This body is nothing but a mass of flesh, bone, and all sorts of filth.
7. Place before the mind the fruits of Self-realization or life in the soul or Brahman or the Eternal, such as Immortality, Eternal bliss, Supreme peace and Infinite knowledge.

If you remember the seven points always, the mind will be weaned from the cravings for sensual pleasures. Vairagya, Viveka and Mumukshutva (dispassion, discrimination from the real and the unreal, and keen longing for liberation from birth and death) will dawn. You should seriously look into the defects of sensual life (Dosha-Drishti) and into the unreal nature of worldly life (Mithya-Drishti).

Read this once daily as soon as you get up from the bed.
