Endless Bliss of the Pure Soul With the Vow of Celibacy

Dadashri : I keep warning you to pay attention to this but to take heed is not easy for you. Yet, by experimenting with celibacy (brahmacharya), say for three to five days or for a whole week in a month one will feel wonderful. If one has practiced celibacy (brahmacharya) for a week in a month, then by the middle of the week he will experience tremendous bliss. The bliss of the Self will express. This bliss is beyond description.

Some people say that they cannot get rid of sexuality. I ask, why are you acting crazy? Why don't you set some disciplined limit for yourself and then make sure that you stick to it. In this day and age, nothing can be achieved without discipline. Some flexibility is allowed.

Questioner: What does one do in a situation where a man wants to practice celibacy (brahmacharya) but his wife does not?
Dadashri: If she does not wish to, then try and make her understand.

Questioner: How should I make her understand?
Dadashri: You have to keep making her understand and gradually it will happen. It does not happen instantly. By continuous discussions and mutual understanding it will happen. Both of you will have to come to a meaningful compromise. You have to discuss and think about the harm of sexual indulgence (abrahmacharya) and thoughts related to this.

You will have to get rid of sex if you want liberation. There are about a thousand mahatmas who take this yearlong vow of celibacy (brahmacharya). 'Grant us a yearlong vow of celibacy (brahmacharya), Dada,' they say. They come to know all the benefits within a year.

Sexual indulgence (Abrahmacharya) is indecision. Indecision is not related to the unfolding of karma.
I was shocked after talking to four to five mahatmas. I told them that this falsehood of sexuality would not do. This is the indecision. You will definitely have to get rid of it. Celibacy (Brahmacharya) is needed first. You are really a celibate (brahmachari) by way of being the Self, but you cannot be in sexual indulgence (abrahmacharya) in worldly interactions. This is a clear conflict.

One who does not have any opinions about celibacy (brahmacharya) or sexual indulgence (abrahmacharya) is considered to be in celibacy (brahmacharya). To constantly remain the Self is my celibacy (brahmacharya). That does not mean that I do not accept the external celibacy (brahmacharya) of thoughts, speech and acts. As you are living a married life, I have to say that there is no problem with sexual indulgence (abrahmacharya), but your opinion for sexual indulgence (abrahmacharya) must not exist. Your opinion should always be for celibacy (brahmacharya). Sexual indulgence (Abrahmacharya) for you is a file that needs to be settled with equanimity. You are not able to experience the bliss of the Self because you are still stuck with your old opinions about sexuality and sexual indulgence (abrahmacharya). Once these opinions leave, you will be able to experience the bliss of the Self. The veil of opinion for sexual indulgence (abrahmacharya) obstructs your clear vision and bliss. The opinion must be exclusively that of, and for celibacy (brahmacharya) only. What is a vow? A vow is that which continues its experience effortlessly. When is the mahavrat of celibacy (brahmacharya) attained? It is the experience that there is not an iota of the thought of sexual indulgence (abrahmacharya), and no memory of it.

Quotes on Brahmacharya - Part 2

"There is a great difference between lust and love. Lust binds and love
liberates. The aim of married life is to attain Moksha or Freedom, but
never the satisfaction of lust. The married couple must lead the sexual
life only till they beget one or two children just to keep up the line of
heritage and after which, the wife must look upon her husband as her own
father or brother and the husband must look upon his wife as his own mother
or sister and thus both must eradicate lust completely. For every sexual
intercourse one has to take a new birth in this world."

"Where there is Rama (God) there is no Kama (lust), and where there is
Kama there is no Rama"

"If one can observe strict and perfect Brahmacharya without a break for
twelve years, then a particular Nadi (nerve) called Medha Nadi develops in a
person. With the development of this Nadi, one gets the sixth sense
(Super-consciousness), by which one can know of the past, present and the
future events."
- Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

"True dispassion does not arise in one by austerity, charity,
pilgrimage etc., but only by directly perceiving one's own nature.
...by right self-exertion firmly reject the seeking of pleasure. when
dispassion matures, the spirit of inquiry arises in oneself. The
spirit of inquiry strengthens dispassion. The two are interdependent,
even as the ocean and the clouds are. These two and also
self-realization are all intimate friends and always exist togather."

"When the self is seen, the mind comes under complete control. When
the mind is in complete control, only then the self is seen completely!"
"Therefore one's intelligent practise has to be simultaenously
twofold; to behold the self and to subdue the mind. By intense
self-effort and steady practice you can gain both these, and then you
will enter that region and never again experience sorrow"
- Yoga Vasistha

"The human energy which is expressed as sex energy, in sexual thought, when
checked and controlled, easily becomes changed into Ojas, and as the
Muladhara guides these, the Yogi pays attention to that centre. He tries to
take up all this sexual energy and convert it into Ojas. It is only the
chaste man or woman who can make the Ojas rise and store it in the brain;
that is why chastity has always been considered the highest virtue. A man
feels that if he is unchaste, spirituality goes away, he loses mental vigour
and moral stamina. That is why in all the religious orders in the world
which have produced spiritual giants you will always find absolute chastity
insisted upon. That is why the monks came into existence, giving up
marriage. There must be perfect chastity, in thought, word and deed.
Without it the practice of Raja-Yoga is dangerous and may lead to insanity."
- Swami Vivekananda

"One that observes Brahmacharya not only must avoid the company of the other
sex but also of those who are given to sexuality."
- From Srimad Bhagavata

"A wise man should avoid unchastity as if it were a burning pit of live coals. From the contact comes sensation, from sensation thirst, from thirst clinging; by ceasing from that, the soul is delivered from all sinful existence."
- Gautama Buddha

"God dwells in you, as you, and you don't have to 'do' anything to
be God-realized or Self-realized, it is already your true and
natural state." Just drop all seeking, turn your attention inward,
and sacrifice your mind to the One Self radiating in the Heart of
your very being. For this to be your own presently lived experience,
Self-Inquiry is the one direct and immediate way."
- Sri Ramana Maharshi

"Misery of dependency on sex is greater than the transient happiness
derived from it. When one realizes this, he will be free from the
false infatuation and vice grip of sex. "

"Millions of lives die in only one act of sex through the loss of
millions of living sperms. This is tremendous violence. Not realizing
this, people believe sexual act to be the highest pleasure. They do
not understand that a life is precious and must not be lost except as
a last resort. But what happens when there is no understanding? "

"When will a woman respect you and be deferential to you? If you were
very sensitive about sex, easily aroused by sexuality, then she would
control you. If you are sexual but not sensitive, not easily aroused,
then she will develop respect for you"
-Dadashri

‘Three Vision’ Stops Sexual Vision

See through the illusion of attraction that traps you in worldly life.

"The whole world is a trap. There is no freedom after been trapped. You will go through life after life and not see an end to it. " -Dadashri

"Use the same experiment that I had used for myself. For me this experiment is constantly in place and it had kept me aware even before enlightenment.  When the vision falls on someone wearing beautiful clothes, a saree worth two thousand rupees, I become aware and see her naked. Then a second awareness arises and I see the body without the skin and then the third awareness arises and I see the intestines, the kind you see when the stomach is cut open. I can also see changes that occur within the intestines.  I can see blood vessels; I can see fecal matter etc. I can see all the refuse this way. Then there is no chance of sexual impulse arising, is there? In all this, the Soul is the only pure thing and that is where my vision stops. Therefore how can any illusion over sex ever occur? "

Shrimad Rajchandra has said, “All the miseries come to an end if you do not get deluded and see the pure Soul (within all).” We read in scriptures that you should not become attached to women but you forget this the moment you see a woman.

"This is the illusion. If this illusion leaves, this view that ‘I am Chandulal’ [leaves], and instead the right vision, ‘ I am pure Soul’, takes hold then all suffering comes to an end. Then the delusion will not happen, attraction will not occur. " - Dadashri

"Ignorance of the Self, coupled with the present worldly knowledge, gives rise to attachment and attraction. If you can visualize the entire life spectrum of this woman that you are attracted to, you will be free from the attachment and the attraction. If you visualize with understanding what she looked like in the womb, what she looked like when she was born, when she was a little baby, when she becomes very old, when paralysis happens, when she is about to be cremated, you do not need to be taught renunciation. People have lost this vision of their worldly reality by what they see today. This is maya, the illusion. -Dadashri"

Avoiding circumstances leading to abrahmacharya (indulgence)

The following 8 circumstances are to be avoided at all cost. If any of these circumstances occurs, immediately address your pure soul and of the person involved (towards which you had sexual intent)and do alochan (admission or confession of wrong doing), pratikraman (heartfelt prayer and apology for the transgression) and pratyakyan (resolve never to repeat the mistake again). By thus repenting and resolving never to repeat the mistakes, your mind will be retrained and and brahmacharya will become easier and easier.

1. Darshan (Look) - Looking at a woman (or man if you are a woman) with sexual intent. Apply three vision instead.
2. Smaran (Smaran) - Thinking about a woman in her absence, let alone thinking about a woman with sexual intent
3. Milan (Meeting) - Meeting a woman alone or encouraging circumstances to meet a woman alone. This is very dangerous and should never happen. You should never meet a woman alone in a private place, as this violates the priciple of siddhant of brahmacharya. If you have been invited to a meeting, and you sense there might be a trap, cancel the meeting.
4. Sparsh (Touch) - Touching a woman. This should be avoided at all cost. If due to social necessity, you have to touch for some reason (hand shake or hug), do it as if you are touching your mother, and do pratikraman immediately inside your mind (pray to the soul of the person to give you strenght for brahmacharya and free you from sexual desires).
5. Bhashan (Speech) - Making small talk with woman, or talking with an intent to attract, or praising about a woman's beauty or her aspects to her or someone else. Discussing or cracking jokes about sexuality with friends.
6. Dressing up with an intent to create attraction.
7. Reading, watching, discussing or thinking about stimulating material.
8. Touching of private parts.

If any of the above circumstances occurs, do pratikraman immediately. Address the pure soul of the file who is disturbing you, with dada bhagawan as witness and do a confession, apology and a resolve never to repeat the mistake again. Also ask for strenght of brahmacharya from the pure soul of the person as well as dada bhagawan (pure soul within). Details of pratikraman vidhi are in this website

http://www.dadashri.org/pratikramanvidhi.html

You have to do pratikraman immediately after a fault happens, otherwise a tuber of sexuality will sprout in your mind, and it will destroy you. If too many mistakes happens, and you allow the above circumstances do happen without pratikraman, the lust will over power you.

If too many mistakes keep happening, check yourself to see if your intent is clear. If your intent for brahmacharya is not clear, its better for you to get married.

By avoiding all these circumstances that lead to brahmacharya, you are making your intent for brahmacharya very clear, and the results will follow easily.

Lady Shanti

71. Lustrous Padam revels in union with the auspicious lady who is praised all the time by jnanis as Shanti.
72. That deep peace is endowed with a presence that can transform an arid desert into an ocean of ambrosia.
73. Enjoy the supreme, felicitous bliss of peace, the beautiful divine lady by remaining still.
74. May you who have married Shanti, the beautifully jewel-bedecked daughter begotten by me, flourish in the supreme enjoyment.
75. To attain bliss, unite with her, the queen among women, in the Heart, (regarding her) as your dearest companion.
76. Enjoying in your heart the bliss of Lady Shanti's tight embrace, completely forget all else.
77. What the jnanis honour and praise as endless supreme bliss is nothing other than the bliss of that beautiful woman, Shanti.
78. She is beautifully calm, has an extremely comely form, is worthy of reverence, and is boundlessly captivating.
79. Offer yourself as dakshina to her. Embrace her. Unite with that lady who is an unsurpassed ocean of magnificent and noble qualities.
80. If you have the good fortune to marry that Fair One (Shanti), your life will be enriched. It will be as though you have discovered buried treasure.
81. Siddhas will greatly revere and honour her, keeping their attention firmly fixed on her feet, just waiting to be of service to her.
82. Whosoever becomes the target of her glance of grace will experience an immeasurable bliss.
83. If she becomes your queen, under her reign you will attain unmatched glory.
84. She is a tender young lady whose form is the absolute and utterly perfect, distilled bliss of Brahman.
85. Those who are living in the presence of that blissful Lady Shanti will not even deign to look at the blissful realm of the gods.
86. For those who have come into possession of the distinguished way of living in union with that Lady Shanti, a life of living with (other) beautifully decorated women will appear abhorrent.

Upon Seeing a Young Woman

Nirkhii ney navyauvana (Upon seeing a young woman) - Srimad Rajchandra
(Translation from Dadavani Jan'09)

While seeing a young woman
when the slightest vibration of a sexual impulse does not arise
Such a one who sees and counts her as a doll of wood
is the one who is indeed like a God (1)

Having renounced the queen of all that is
beautiful in this world
Is equivalent to renouncing all that is
the embodiment of grief (2)

By conquering sex
you have conquered the worldly life
Just as conquering the King you have
conquered the army, kingdom, and power (3)

To get absorbed and carried away
by the sprouting thought of sexuality
Is equivalent to losing control of all
awareness and knowledge after drinking a little wine (4)

The one who supports the purity of brahamacharya
with a sacred fence from all angles
His further lives before nirvana are minimal
This is a statement based on elemental knowledge, brother (5)

Shiyad means shilvaan.
Such a one, who is chaste and maintains the highest integrity
in thoughts speech and action
gets an excellent fruit(6)

Nothing can be contained without a vessel
and with the right vessel one can attain the Self
To become the vessel
nurture brahmacharya, oh wise ones. (7)

Dadashri: The one who sings this pada spiritual hymn will attain clarity of purity. You should sing this pada hymn, daily, twice everyday. If you triumph over sex then you have won the whole world, that is it! Thereafter go ahead and eat or drink what you like, nothing is going to hinder you. But whoever won this, wins the whole world. This is the only place where a human being gets trapped. Once you triumph over sexuality, you are the Emperor of the world! No karma will be bound-charged at all. Sexuality and sexual interaction through thoughts, speech or acts bind tremendous and horrible karma. Millions of living forms die in only one act of sexual intercourse. And one ends up with roonanubandha binding karmic ties, with all these subtle life forms jives. So if one triumphs over only this one thing: vishaya sex, then it is more than enough.

Sex - The highest pleasure in the Rascal culture

The following quotes are from a dialogue of Srila Prabhupada (Founder of Krishna consciouness movement) with his disciples. The full article can be read the the link at the end of this post.

yan maithunadi grhamedhi sukham hi tuccham kanduyanena karayor iva duhkha duhkham:
"Sex is like the rubbing of two hands to relieve an itch. Those with no spiritual knowledge consider this itching the greatest happiness, although actually, from start to finish, the whole business is distress‑‑and it is most abominable."

"Is that pleasure? These supposedly advanced rascals think it is pleasure to unite the urine-passing parts. [Laughter.] And we have to believe this is pleasure‑a standard of pleasure utterly third‑class, fourth‑class. Yan maithunadi grhamedhi sukham hi tuccham. Very abominable. Tuccham: the Vedic literature says, "Sex is most abominable." And yet these fools take it as the highest goal, and they make all sorts of elaborate arrangements for this abominable pleasure. "

"If you stop sex, then you become spiritually advanced. This is the secret. If you stop sex, then you will become spiritually advanced, and if you indulge in sex, then you will become materially enthusiastic. That is the difference between Western and Eastern culture. The whole Eastern culture is based on how to stop sex, and here in the Western countries‑how to increase sex. They are eating meat, eggs, drinking wine. These things will increase sex desire. And as soon as you get a very satisfactory sex life, you become enthusiastic to work hard. Therefore for karmis, or those seeking material advancement, marriage is necessary, because without sex they cannot work. And for those seeking spiritual advancement, sex is prohibited. "

"after sex–licit or illicit–the consequence is suffering. Even when the sex is licit, then you still have to take care of your wife, and you also have to take care of the children, always in anxiety about their food and clothing, their education, their upliftment, and so on and so forth–always undergoing suffering. "

"And if the sex is illicit, then you have to undergo these sufferings: because you commit the sin of killing the child by contraceptives or abortion, as a result, in your next life you must be killed. And in the mean time, you have to go to the doctor and pay his exorbitant fees, and so on. So where is the relief from suffering? Whether illicit or licit, sex means you have to suffer. "

"Why not stop all the botheration of sex altogether? That they cannot, because they are animals. Because they have created an animal civilization, they cannot escape all this botheration. Kandutive manivasi visaheta dhirah. Why don’t they teach people to become dhirah, sober‑‑"Let me tolerate this itching sensation"‑brahmacari?"

Brahmacharya - quotable quotes

1. "You are not enjoying the happiness of the Soul but instead you have asked for happiness from the body. There is no problem if the happiness derived is from the Soul, but you have borrowed from the body and so you will have to pay it back. This is a loan. Whatever pleasure you derived from that loan, you will have to repay by an equivalent amount of suffering. Whatever has been borrowed from the body will have to be paid back to the body." - Dadashri

2. "After the unbearable heat of a day why is it that the cattle soak in the dirty muddy waters ? The deep desire for coolness from heat makes them forget the stench of the dirty muddy water. Similarly modern day humans who suffer from the constant struggles and tensions of daily life at work and at at home, seek a diversion from the fire of such tensions and a release through sex and forget its consequences over and over again !" - Dadashri

3. "When hunger dire stomach pinches
Gruel and meanest rice like nectar taste
Even so the keenest pleasure springs
Not from the inherent nature of objects
But from the intensity of the desire."
- Sri Ramana Maharshi

4. Q: How does one reach the Supreme State?
Nisargadatta Maharaj: "By renouncing all lesser desires. As long as you are pleased with the lesser, you cannot have the Supreme. Whatever pleases you, keeps you back. Whatever pleases you keeps you back. Until you realize the unsatisfactoriness of everything, its transiency and limitation, and collect your energies in one great longing, ever the first step is not made. On the other hand, the integrity of the desire for the Supreme is by itself a call from the Supreme. Nothing, physical or mental, can give you freedom. You are free once you understand that your bondage is of your own making and cease forging the chains that bind you."

5. "Not knowing the bliss of self-awareness
Eristic people highly rate sex and
Such like pleasures. Living thus
They yearn for these even when they die."
-Sri Ramana Maharshi

6. "Eagerly seizing a bare, dry bone
The foolish dog bites it with sharp teeth
Tears his own mouth, tastes its own blood
And gloating says, 'Nothing else
Is as sweet as bone'
-Sri Ramana Maharshi

7. "Under the tree the shade is pleasant; out in the open the heat is scorching. A person who has been going about in the sun feels cool when he reaches the shade. Someone who keeps on going from the shade into the sun and then back into the shade is a fool. A wise man stays permanently in the shade." - Ramana Maharshi

8. "Through extreme clarity laden thinking processes, it has become established with finality and incontrovertibly siddha that uninterrupted bliss exists through the support, cover and grace of shuddha pure Gnan and that is the only place, where absolute samadhi— without any effects from physical, mental or externally induced disturbances—lies. The view that a woman (sex) is the highest source of pleasure is only the result of the imagination that arises out of deluded and tinted avaran vision drashti. But she is not that for sure. The location (vulva) by which one enjoys the pleasure through a woman is such that if one ‘sees’ it with discriminative vision, it will become evident that it is not even worthy of a vomiting act." - Krupadev Shrimad Rajchandra

Seven gems of dispassion (Vairagya)

Four Spiritual Gems
1. Remember the pains of Samsara
2. Remember Death
3. Remember the Saints
4. Remember God

1 and 2 will produce Vairagya.
3 will bring inspiration.
4 will cause attainment of God-Consciousness.

How To Get Vairagya
(Remember these seven vital points)

1. Hari Om, Sensual pleasure is momentary, deceptive, illusory and imaginary.
2. A mustard of pleasure is mixed with a mountain of pain.
3. Enjoyment cannot bring about satisfaction of a desire. On the contrary it makes the mind more restless after enjoyment through intense craving (Trishnas and Vasanas).
4. Sensual pleasure is an enemy of Brahma-Jnana
5. Sensual pleasure is the cause for birth and death.
6. This body is nothing but a mass of flesh, bone, and all sorts of filth.
7. Place before the mind the fruits of Self-realization or life in the soul or Brahman or the Eternal, such as Immortality, Eternal bliss, Supreme peace and Infinite knowledge.

If you remember the seven points always, the mind will be weaned from the cravings for sensual pleasures. Vairagya, Viveka and Mumukshutva (dispassion, discrimination from the real and the unreal, and keen longing for liberation from birth and death) will dawn. You should seriously look into the defects of sensual life (Dosha-Drishti) and into the unreal nature of worldly life (Mithya-Drishti).

Read this once daily as soon as you get up from the bed.
